Why Detroit?

Most of you are probably saying "Detroit? Why Detroit?". It so happens that Detroit has four things of interest:
  1. The famous North American International Auto Show, also known as the Detroit Auto Show.
  2. The truly impressive Henry Ford Museum... One of America's best kept secrets.
  3. The only place in America where you can play the ancient Belgian game of Feather Bowling!
  4. And the 5-star Henry Hotel, previously the Ritz-Carlton, our overnight stop on this trip.

Our Hotel

Picture
We will be staying in the exceptional 5-star Henry Hotel.

This hotel should be a destination all by itself. You just have to walk into the lobby to go Wow! They even have an art curator to take care of all the artwork that adorns the walls of the hotel. A curator in a hotel? What a concept but that should give you an idea of what the hotel is going to be like.

The hotel has all of the amenities that you would expect from a 4-5 star upscale hotel including pool, jacuzzi, spa, fitness centre, Frette linens, upscale amenities in the bathrooms and all the in-room facilities you could want. Don't forget to bring your swimsuits if you feel like relaxing those tired muscles after having spent a day walking the auto show.

The hotel stay includes a deluxe hot buffet breakfast on Sunday morning. And we mean deluxe... this isn't some toast and bagels... this is a proper hot breakfast in the hotel's dining room.

North American International Auto Show
aka Detroit Auto Show

Picture
If you're an auto buff then you're going to have a blast at this show. If autos are not really your thing, you'll have a blast anyways. I mean, imagine visiting one of the largest auto shows in North America and checking out the next generation of transportation with more than 500 vehicles on display, representing the most innovative designs in the world. That's pretty cool whether you're a fan of automobiles or not.

Shopping Alternative to Auto Show

Picture
For those of you who would prefer to skip the auto show, we have alternate plans for you. We will transport you to the elegant Fairlane Town Center Mall in Dearborn with over 160 stores and restaurants. So while the auto show fans are wandering the aisles at the show, you can be wandering the aisles and doing some shopping in the stores at the mall.

Henry Ford Museum

Picture
This museum has to be one of America's best kept secrets. You will be blown away by not only the incredible collection of items on display but also by the museum's philosophy of allowing visitor's to get close to the exhibits, touch them, climb on lots of them and take all the pictures your camera will hold! This is such an interesting and amazing collection that there will be something here that will certainly capture your attention and make the whole trip worthwhile.

One of the items on display is the original City of Montgomery transit bus that Rosa Parks was on. You have all heard of the incident in 1955 when she refused to give up her seat to a white man. Well, not only has the Henry Ford Museum got the actual bus on display but you can get on the bus and have pictures taken of yourself inside the bus sitting on the seat. How cool is that?

Some other things to see:
  • Abraham Lincoln's Chair. President Abraham Lincoln was sitting in this rocking chair when he was assassinated.
  • George Washington Camp Bed.
  • President John F. Kennedy's limousine from the tragic day when he was assassinated. See the limousine in which he rode with his wife Jackie.
Of course, as expected the Henry Ford Museum probably has the world's best collection showing the history of the automobile. Some amazing cars that you will never see anywhere else from the original Model T Ford to the present day. Not just limited to cars, almost all other forms of transportation are here including some stunning steam locomotives, tandem bicycles, motorcycles, aircraft and even the original McDonald's Drive Up and the Oscar Mayer "Weinermobile"!

Feather Bowling & Belgian Beer

Picture
Yes, there really is such a sport. It happens to be a very old Belgian game using wooden bowling balls that look like cheese wheels and a pigeon feather that sticks out of the ground. For more information, check out Feather Bowling on Wikipedia.

We're going to be visiting the only place in America that still offers feather bowling lanes. We have reserved the lanes for 2 hours for our bus tour. Not only will you get to enjoy throwing some cheese wheels but you'll also have an opportunity to try to some Belgian food and Belgian ales at this classic and casual Detroit hangout that's not in any guide books.
