Brief geography lesson & key facts

  • The Azores are a chain of 9 volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean and a territory of Portugal. 
  • São Miguel Island is the largest of the islands. Ponta Delgada, the capital city and the largest city of the Azores is on São Miguel Island . We will be flying to and staying in Ponta Delgada and touring São Miguel Island during our visit.
  • Flying time from Toronto to the Azores is 5 hrs 30 mins. Flying time returning to Toronto is one hour longer due to headwinds and takes 6 hrs 35 mins. 
  • The time zone in the Azores is 4 hours ahead of Toronto, also known as GMT-1.
  • The typical temperatures during our visit will be daytime highs of 22C and night time lows of  16C.

Hotel Azor

The Azor Hotel is a modern 5-star deluxe hotel located right in the harbour in Ponta Delgada. The hotel offers spectacular ocean views, a highly rated on-site restaurant, a lobby market, gym, casino and panoramic outdoor pool. This will be our home for 5 nights. 

Travel

  • A valid passport with an expiry date of at least 3 months past your planned return date is required. Canadian and US passport holders do NOT require a visa. Citizens of other countries may require a visa. 
  • Flight departs Toronto on Saturday June 16, 2018 at 9:00 PM
  • Flight returns to Toronto on Friday June 22, 2018 at 7:20 PM

Cancellations & Refunds

  • Balance of payment is required by April 25, 2018. Balance is non-refundable once paid.
  • All reservations for which full payment has not been received by April 25, 2018 will be cancelled automatically. Any deposits paid will be forfeited. A reminder email will be sent a few days before April 25. 
  • Your seat on the tour with ShortTrips.ca is fully transferable to anyone else by May 15, 2018. A name change fee of $150 will apply after this date. 

Travelling With Children

  • Children 10  and older are welcome on this tour, same price as adults. 

Single Supplement

  • Are you travelling by yourself? We guarantee to find you a roommate of the same gender or we pay the single surcharge!
  • If you wish to have a private room by yourself, that is not a problem, simply choose single occupancy at the time of booking and pay the single occupancy rate. 

Emergency Medical/Travel Insurance

  • Emergency medical and trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended.
  • If you are not covered by a workplace or other policy, we recommend that you purchase such insurance for this trip.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Sat June 16, 2018

Meet at Toronto Pearson airport at 6PM and we fly together as a group to the Azores. Flight departs at 9PM from Toronto. Arrival in Ponta Delgada is 6:30 AM on Sunday June 16. Dinner is served on board the flight. 

Day 2 - Sun June 17, 2018

Arrive at airport and transfer to hotel Azor, about 20 min. from Airport. It is too early for check-in so we store luggage at the hotel and proceed to the hotel dining room for a full leisurely breakfast.  At around 10:30 we go on a city tour by colourful Tuk Tuks. Return to the hotel after the tour for check-in and rest.  Welcome dinner at 7:30 PM with drinks in the hotel dining room included.

Day 3 - Mon June 18, 2018

Breakfast at the hotel. Then you take the mountain road towards the twin lakes. Stop at "Vista do Rei" viewpoint for the remarkable scenery. Descend to the valley of Sete Cidades for an opportunity to leisurely walk along the shores of the green and blue lakes. Continue along the north coast through Bretanha. Lunch at a typical Azorean restaurant included. Proceed to Ribeira Grande for a brief stop and then continue along the mountain road towards Lagoa do Fogo and a view of the island from an altitude of 900m. Proceed southwards to the village of Lagoa, visit a pineapple plantation in hothouses and return to the hotel around 5:30 PM. Dinner is on your own this evening. 

Day 4 - Tue June 19, 2018

Breakfast at the hotel. Then you depart along the south coast road passing the village of Lagoa and the Caloura viewpoint. Stop at Vila Franca (original capital of the island) for a historical visit and coffee break. Arrive at the valley of Furnas; visit to the lake, hot springs and surrounding caverns. Meals are cooked by natural underground vapours. After a typical Portuguese “Cozido” lunch, you visit the botanical gardens containing thermal springs, fumaroles and carbonated water. (You can swim in a natural hot water sulphur pool), Crossing to the north coast, you stop at the tea plantation and Sta. Iria viewpoint. Continue to Ribeira Grande. Return to hotel at around 5:30 PM. Dinner is on your own this evening. 

Day 5 - Wed June 20, 2018

Breakfast at the hotel. Then you depart for a full day tour to Nordeste – stopping at local villages and lookout points with enchanting views of the north east point of the island. Lunch at a local village restaurant. Proceed to Ponta da Madrugada viewpoint. Stop at Agua Retorta Provacao – a pioneer village, and return to the hotel. Dinner on your own. 

Day 6 - Thu June 21, 2018

Breakfast at the hotel. Then one hour tram tour of the gardens & beaches. This is your final full day in Ponta Delgada so we have left the rest of the day free for a day of leisure. By now you have a good feel for the city and you have so many choices -- visit the local beaches of Pesqueiro or San Pedro, explore the city, do some shopping or just relax by the hotel pool. Farewell Dinner at a selected local restaurant. 

Day 7 - Fri June 22, 2018

Alas, our last day in the Azores. You will be saying goodbye to the Azores but you will also leave with the great memories and experiences you shared! 

After breakfast, check out. Bags will be stored at the hotel with the bell desk. Lunch is on your own and you will have a little bit of free time. The bus will transfer us to the airport in early afternoon. Our flight departs at 4PM and we arrive back in Toronto at 6:35 PM local time. Dinner is served on the flight home.
